Learn more about Scleral Conact Lenses
What Are They?
Scleral Contact Lenses are a custom rigid gas permeable lens digitally cut for each individual. This requires an in depth process in which each patient's surface of the eye is carefully measured and diagnostic lenses are used in conjunction with precise imaging to ensure the perfect fit.
How are they Different?
Scleral contact lenses separate themselves from other types of contacts by the way they lay on the eye.
A standard disposable or rigid gas permeable contact lens will lay directly in contact with the cornea. The cornea is packed full of pain receptors causing it to be much more sensitive to touch.
A scleral contact lens rests on the sclera, or white of the eye, which contains much fewer of these pain receptors and the lens never comes in contact with the cornea by vaulting over it.
This vaulting allows for a very comfortable fit while allowing us to treat visual conditions that may not otherwise be able to solved with glasses or conventional contact lenses.
What Conditions do they Treat?
Scleral contact lenses can be used for a variety of things. Among other things, they are most commonly used for patients with corneal diseases such as Keratoconus, patients with high amounts of astigmatism, or in some cases patients with severe dry eye.
These lenses can also be used for completely healthy patients who have a high priority on the clearest vision possible.
